Because primary lymphoedema is rare, your child should ideally be assessed and followed by a specialist centre with expertise in paediatric and primary lymphoedema. Early assessment by an experienced multidisciplinary team helps confirm the diagnosis, identify any related conditions, and build a treatment plan that can adapt as your child grows.

This team may include physicians with expertise in lymphatic disease, physiotherapists or lymphoedema therapists, nurses, genetic specialists, dermatologists, psychologists, podiatrists and, when needed, surgeons, dietitians or occupational therapists — each contributing a different part of your child's care.

Since regular visits to a specialist centre aren't always practical, care is often shared with local healthcare professionals: the specialist centre sets the overall plan, while local therapists help deliver treatment closer to home. Good communication between everyone involved is essential.
