3. Does my child need compression garments?
Short answer
For children
Lots of kids with lymphoedema wear compression — it helps your body manage the swelling. Your team will tell you if and when you need it.
For parents & caregivers
Compression is often an important part of treatment, but it's always individually prescribed and reviewed regularly as your child grows.

Compression garments are one of the most effective treatments for controlling lymphoedema — they support lymphatic drainage, reduce fluid build-up and help maintain the improvements achieved with treatment. Not every child needs compression immediately; the decision depends on the severity of swelling, the affected area, your child's age, daily activities and how the condition changes over time.
Because children grow quickly, garments need regular review and replacement to keep fitting correctly and comfortably. Wherever possible, compression should still let children stay active and take part fully in school, sport and play.
